One In, One Out

£3.99

Mistress Cwen’s time has come, and the midwife stands ready. So, there won’t be any murder, obviously. Brother Hermitage will have enough to do without yet another wretched death to investigate.

If only life were so simple, or death, come to that. A delivery in a barrow is enough to create chaos, and Hermitage wonders how he can investigate a blatant murder without mentioning it to Wat and Cwen.

Perhaps the sheriff should take charge for once, after all, it is supposed to be his job. And the king has just appointed a new Sheriff of Nottingham, he’s bound to be a reasonable and honest fellow.
Or the headman of Derby. Isn’t he supposed to run the town and deal with this sort of thing?

When Hermitage is told that he absolutely must not investigate, he should be very happy. But that’s a bit suspicious in its own right.
And when everyone claims never to have seen the victim, even though his body was found in one of the most-visited spots in town, Hermitage’s call to duty takes over.

The first step is to find out who the victim was. That shouldn’t be too complicated, should it?

Description

Volume 37: Births and deaths, but no marriages.

Mistress Cwen has a baby, Wat has a fainting fit and Hermitage isn’t at all calm, but carries on.

Surely, a murder wouldn’t interrupt this important event. Well, it would, obviously, but Wat and Cwen don’t need to know about it.

And Hermitage doesn’t need to investigate it, apparently. Which is a bit suspicious in its own right.

Perhaps a little investigation, just to make sure…
